It is enables you to publish research, experiment with digital tools and methods in a class or on your own. Digital Scholarship at Brown is intended to supplement the web services that Brown already offers. If one of the other web services can accomplish what you need, you should use it. You can see what else is available on the University Relations Websites at Brown page.

Once you have read the Guidelines for Use and been approved for a Digital Scholarship at Brown domain, you will have to become familiar with the Control Panel (cPanel) and understand how to install and organize your web applications. This documentation covers how to use the cPanel and how to set up your applications. It also has sections on some of the more common applications (WordPress, Scalar, Omeka and and Grav, a simple, general purpose content management system).

Beyond cPanel

The cPanel provides some file manipulation and GitHub access, but we anticipate that some users will prefer direct FTP and command line access and may want to install some applications of their own, although there are limits to what you can install on Digital Scholarship at Brown. Details are covered below.

Web Publication principles

As you start to work on your Digital Scholarship at Brown web application, there are three important considerations that you should take into account in your planning and execution:

Accessibility/Usability: Produce web pages that are accessible to readers with different devices and abilities. Making your pages accessible will help them reach a wider audience, and make them ADA compliant.

A brief, clear video on accessibility is available in Workday learning. You need to log in with your Brown ID to view this.

Brown IT has a document that provides Accessibility Guidelines. It also provides information on Brown specific formats that may not apply to your site.

You can learn more about web accessibility on the W3C Web Standards Accessibility Overview page.

Copyright and Licensing: Secure the rights to use any content on your web pages that isn’t created by you, or make sure that it is licensed for re-use or in the public domain. Always provide credit lines and citations, so your readers can identify the provenance of your material. Add a license and citation information of your own so others know how to cite and re-use your work.

You can learn more about licensing your material on Creative Commons. You can also walk through a simple questionnaire for choosing a license.

Sustainability and Re-use: Think about the longevity of your site, and of the components that are in your site. How easy is it to export your material and what format will it be delivered in? If you are aggregating data, you may want to make sure that you are also generating metadata that describes it, explains the collecting principles, context and format. If someone else wants to re-use your data, can they retrieve it easily and will it be accompanied by its metadata?

Technical support

Domains on Brown’s Digital Scholarship hosting service are meant to be self-service, therefore the library offers limited technical support. Please schedule a consultation with CDS if you are unsure about your needs. We are happy to meet with you to discuss your project.

If you are having problems with account setup, or questions about using the cPanel or domain setup, we will do our best to help you.

Consultation Scheduling

CDS staff can meet with you to discuss your goals for a project on the Digital Scholarship at Brown hosting service and are happy to help you strategize and get started with your project. If you are having trouble answering the questions: Which application is best for me? Should I use WordPress, Scalar, Omeka Classic, or Omeka S, or something else? How should I prepare my data? If this is being used in a class, how do I scaffold my assignments? —schedule a consultation by emailing cds_info@brown.edu.

Digital Scholarship at Brown is a service that makes it possible for Brown students, faculty and other researchers to work with a variety of web applications and develop a web presence.
